Tournament Results: A Post-Event Publishing Checklist
Publish tournament results only after the competition lead has checked them against the official records. Speed matters less than avoiding a wrong champion, score, or team name. Use one results location and correct it transparently when a verified error is found.
Reconcile the underlying records
Collect the official score records and verify team identities, divisions, and advancement. Resolve discrepancies with the designated officials or competition lead. Check whether any result is provisional under the event’s adopted procedure. A social message from a spectator is a useful lead to investigate, not an authoritative replacement for the official record.
Prepare a clear public summary
Include the event name, date, division, final placements, and results appropriate to the competition. Use the same team names used in the schedule. If you publish standings, make sure the stated tiebreak process explains the order. Avoid exposing roster details or participant information that is unnecessary for a public results page.
Review images and acknowledgements
Use photographs you have permission to publish and follow the event’s approach to participant privacy. Confirm captions identify the right team and occasion. Thank officials, volunteers, venue staff, and sponsors accurately. Do not turn a results update into an unsupported claim about attendance, revenue, or the event’s ranking in the region.
Keep corrections traceable
Assign an owner for correction requests and link to a contact route. When a material result changes, update the public reference and notify affected teams. Retain the underlying competition records according to your organization’s requirements. Use the final verified results as part of the review for the next edition.
A practical example
Before posting a winner graphic, compare the final matchup, final score, division name, and team spelling with the official record. Then check the image caption separately. A correct image paired with the wrong division label can still mislead teams and supporters.
Your working checklist
- Verify scores and identities.
- Confirm final versus provisional status.
- Review privacy and photo permissions.
